Sapil is a UAE fragrance house, and Nice Feelings Black has been in their line since 2009. It is a fougere in the old sense: aromatic and fresh at the opening, then spiced through the middle, then dry and mossy at the end. That mossy drydown is the part that has gone out of fashion in mainstream releases and is exactly why people who like classic masculine fragrance keep buying it.

It opens on lavender, lemon and bergamot, sharp for the first ten minutes. Cinnamon, carnation, coriander and jasmine sit in the heart and give it the spice. What it lands on is patchouli, oakmoss, cedar, sandalwood and amber, warm and slightly bitter in a way that reads as grown-up rather than sweet.

The case for it over a designer name at three times the price is straightforward. This is Middle Eastern perfumery, where the concentration tends to run generous and the drydown lasts. It is not trying to smell like anything else on the shelf.
