Baby soap

Why babies need their own soap

Infant skin is thinner than an adult's, loses moisture faster, and has a barrier that is still developing. Ordinary soap is too alkaline for it — it strips the natural oils and leaves the skin dry and prone to irritation. A dedicated baby soap is milder and closer to the skin's own pH.

Which of the two

• Kodomo New Born with Natural Moisturizer, 75g — for the earliest months, when the skin barrier is at its most fragile.
• Kodomo Original with Moisturizer, 75g — for older babies and toddlers.

Washing a baby — less is more

Newborns do not need a daily bath. Two or three times a week is plenty in the first weeks, with clean water in between. Over-washing is a far more common cause of dry infant skin than under-washing.

• Keep the water warm rather than hot — hot water strips a baby's skin barrier quickly.
• Keep the bath short, five to ten minutes.
• Pat dry rather than rubbing, and moisturise within a few minutes while the skin still holds water.
• If your child has eczema-prone skin, washing less often usually helps more than switching products.

As they get older

Once bath time becomes a negotiation, the 2-in-1 bath and shampoo range is the practical next step — one bottle, one step, and a character on the front that the child picks themselves.
