When a gel is not strong enough

Getting it right

• Warm a small amount between your palms first. Wax applied cold and straight from the tub clumps, and clumps are visible.
• Apply to dry or towel-dry hair for the strongest hold. Wet hair dilutes it.
• Build up gradually. Start with less than you think you need — you can always add, but taking wax out means washing it out.
• Shape with fingertips rather than a comb, which drags the product into lines.

Washing it out

Stiff-hold wax needs a proper wash, not a rinse. Shampoo it out at the end of the day — build-up on the scalp is a common cause of flaking that gets blamed on dandruff. Work the shampoo into the scalp with your fingertips and rinse thoroughly.

Wax or gel?

Wax for shape and texture that has to hold a form. Gel for a smoother, tidier finish that survives humidity. Wax gives more control; gel gives a cleaner look.
