Newborn skin is roughly a third thinner than an adult's and has barely started building its own protective barrier. That is why it dries out and flakes so fast in the first weeks, and why the bar you reach for in that period is worth thinking about more than the one you use later.

This is Kodomo's newborn bar, made by Lion Corporation in Thailand. It is hypoallergenic and made without dyes, with glycerin, vitamin E and milk protein carried in to hold moisture in the skin while it cleans rather than stripping it.

This or the Original? Both share the same gentle base and both are hypoallergenic. This one is positioned for the newborn stage; the Original is the everyday bar most households move to afterwards and use for the whole family. If you are buying for a baby shower or a first-time parent, this is the safer of the two.

Suits: newborns and infants, daily bathing, and skin that dries or flakes easily.

Worth knowing: 75g bar. Lather it in your own hands first and wash the baby with the lather, rather than running the bar over their skin directly. Keep it in a draining dish so it does not sit in water. As with anything on a baby, stop if the skin reacts and ask your paediatrician.
