Petroleum jelly has outlasted a century of more sophisticated alternatives for a simple reason: it works. Vaseline is an occlusive rather than a moisturiser in the usual sense — it does not add water to the skin, it forms a seal that stops water leaving. For lips, which have no oil glands of their own, that is exactly the right mechanism.

Apply to lips that are already slightly damp — right after drinking water, or after a shower — so there is moisture underneath for the seal to hold in. On genuinely cracked lips, a thick layer before bed does more overnight than repeated dabs through the day.
