Is an electric toothbrush actually worth it?

On the evidence, yes — but not for the reason most people assume. The benefit is not raw scrubbing power; it is that a good electric brush removes the two things people get wrong by hand: brushing too hard and not brushing for long enough.

• A pressure sensor warns you when you are pressing too hard. Brushing hard does not clean better — it wears enamel and recedes gums, and it is the single most common brushing mistake.
• A two-minute timer settles the other one. Most people brush for well under a minute and are certain they brushed for two.

Using it well

Do not scrub. Guide the brush head slowly along each tooth and let it do the work — the technique is genuinely different from a manual brush, and people who scrub with an electric brush get the worst of both. Angle it slightly towards the gumline, and spend roughly thirty seconds on each quarter of the mouth.

Replace the brush head every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay.
